…is hard to do while working out. I hadn’t realized that most of my bars and protein supplements contained milk solids until last week. I hadn’t realized I have to give up my beloved Altoids, as they contain gelatin. Oh, blissful ignorance, I do miss you!
I’m pumping in a lot of Vega. It’s actually pretty good, though Eloy, my office colleague, thinks it looks disgusting. It’s not bad, and it takes care of lunch.
In terms of training, I think I’ll shoot for the San Francisco Marathon in July. If I can get some speed work done, and get my weight back down around 165 (ten pounds below where I am right now), I might be able to do a nice clip…
But dang, even as a happy vegan, I miss the Altoids.

Hugo,
This is my first comment here. I’ve been reading several of your posts lately. Not only are they enjoyable to read, but I’ve learned a lot about myself here, how people think and why people are the way they are. I think you’re doing a great job.:)
Just out of curiousity, have you read the book called “Eat Right 4 Your Type” by Peter J. D’Adamo? I can’t say that I agree with everything in there, but it sure explained somethings that never made sense to me before. One of them is why, if everybody in the same family eats the same food and the same amount of food, why some family members have high cholesterol and high blood pressure, while others don’t? I did some comparison within our family and yes, it made sense that members with blood type A were more prone to getting high cholesterol and high blood pressure when they ate large amount of meats. Blood type A members were also able to eat vegetarian foods and absorb the necessary vitamins, minerals, etc. while blood type O members needed to have meat intake to stay energetic. Very interesting.
If you have read this book, please post your opinion and thoughts. Thank you.
I have indeed read it! And I am A+, and what he says make sense. I am thriving on a veggie diet.
But let me be clear that my primary reason for eating this way is not my own health, but a sense of justice for animals.
You know, right?, that most gelatin isn’t even just vegetarian. Unless it’s derived from agar agar or guar gum, it’s probably made from animal tendons and bones.
Exaxtly, which is why I’ve avoided jello for a long time. But I hadn’t thought about those darned Altoids.
There’s absolutely no science behind the idea that blood type has anything to do with what you should eat. Don’t get suckered in by that stuff
If you can’t have jello, does that also mean you can’t eat Jelly Bellies?
*Jelly Belly
Some jelly beans contain gelatin and some don’t; I’m not sure about Jelly Belly(R).
I was a vegetarian for about 20 years (and intermittently macrobiotic and/or vegan and/or just plain fanatically crazy w/r/t food within those years).
It was not much of a hardship, actually (I’m also Type A, now that you mention it), although I ran into pretty serious trouble when I tried too hard to stick to a low fat, low calorie regimen and do any serious working out. So be careful.
I’ve never been much of a sweets eater, but I really really hated having to give up Altoids, Mentos, and Rice Krispie(tm) Treats. Also note that many dietary supplements and/or medications that are in capsules contain gelatin.
Thanks, alphabitch, for the reminder about capsules.
I’m definitely not eating low calorie — that would be very hard while trying to work out. I’m still pumping in 3000-4000 calories a day, easy. Lots of hemp protein and a fair amount of brown rice pasta.
