Hugo, I mean no disrespect and you are often insightful on issues of ethnicity, but why did the reporter go to you about Asian American issues when your specialties are history and gender studies? Wouldn’t it have made more sense for them to speak to Prof. Ling or someone else at PCC who specializes in Asian American Studies? (Or were they hoping to get input from you about how Cho’s gender might have played into the killings?)
Sydney, the reporter knew about my blog. Also, I do teach — in my men and masculinity courses — the subject of ethnicity and cultural constructions of manhood. I am no expert on Asian Americans, but I am fairly familiar with the literature on contemporary Asian masculinity.
