There’s some interesting discussion going on between both the DC Madam and Male Sex Drive posts below. I’ve got a post in my head that deals with lust, fantasy, fidelity, feminism, and the discourse of uncontrollable male sexuality, but it will have to wait until tomorrow.
Big bonus of being vegan (and, largely, raw): I need less sleep, as my body isn’t so tired from digesting meat, dairy, corn solids, and so forth. I’m now good to go on six hours a night on a consistent basis, and this makes me very happy, as it means I can fit more into my day.
Today I woke up at 5:00, did my morning meditation and journaling, had a cup of coffee (that’s one thing I have no intention of giving up) and headed out for a great 11-mile run. I’m now starting to ramp up training for July’s San Francisco Marathon, and that means one long run on Sundays and a “mid-length” run on Wednesdays. If I can get my mileage up to around 50 a week by the middle of the month, I’ll feel pretty good. By the end of the month, after my birthday, I’ll be ready for a little speed work.
Now I’m in the office, getting ready for office hours — I have several students coming, most to go over their midterms. At 10:25, I lecture on post-Napoleonic Europe and the rise of Nationalism; at 12 noon, I’ll discuss the rise of the Roman Republic and the Gracchi; at 1:25, I have my “dysfunctional family” humanities course, and we’ll be talking about Ibsen’s “Doll’s House” and the role of Christine Linde as proto-feminist hero.
After school, I have some student journals to finish marking. Then it’s off to the gym for some quick lifting, home for a quick shower and snack, and off to Wednesday night youth group. Then it’s home by 9:00PM for some chinchilla time, and some (Lord willing, quick) work on a proposal for some workshops I want to teach on men and sexuality. I’ll make my lunch for tomorrow, and lay out my clothes for the morning. And when all that’s done, my wife and I will sit down (she with a glass of Cabernet or Pinot, me with a glass of Gerolsteiner), and we’ll “de-brief” and laugh together. If all goes well, we’ll be lights out by midnight.
It’s gonna be an awesome day; I feel blessed beyond words to have the life I do. I don’t give a darn if I sound like a caricature, describing my day. This is an eponymous blog, after all.
More posting tomorrow.

Hey, I was just wondering: Do chinchillas like to watch TV? I heard that somewhere but I am not sure if it’s true. If it’s true, it must look super cute!
You don’t sound like a caricature. In fact, it’s quite refreshing and encouraging that you love your life. So many people don’t (for better or worse reasons), and their misery brings everyone else down. I am trying hard to surround myself with genuinely happy people. And I don’t mean the smile-all-the-time annoying Joel Olsteen happy. I mean the deeply content kind that make you feel happy just being around them. Yay!
OMG, chinchillas love television — particularly cartoons. We have a television in their nursery; it’s on Boomerang during their active time, which is 7PM to 7AM. We were on Cartoon Network, but I didn’t think they needed to see Adult Swim. Jetsons reruns are better, if sexist.
Oh come on! Adult Swim is the best! Aqua Teen Hunger Force! Woohoo! (I indulge in it when I want mindless entertainment).
By the way, that is soooo cute! I wonder why they like TV so much. My cat ignores it.
Your body needs less sleep because you are eating vegan????
Can you point me in the direction of more, reliable information about energy levels and food. I have been vegetarian (more or less) for about 2 years. I have various reasons for not eating meat. Unfortunately, I have not noticed a difference in my energy level.
Do you eat full meals at any time during the day? It sounds like you mostly “snack” throughout the day.
I’ll try and find some good stuff online for you, most of what I have is in hard print. (Google “less sleep” vegan and you’ll get some good answers.)
Yes, small light meals are a great way to sustain energy and keep the GI tract from working hard at any one particular time. Heavy meals — or even light amounts of heavy food — slow me down and make me much more lethargic. If I eat a big dinner, I need an hour more of sleep.
I only really noticed the improvement when I went from vegetarian to vegan, and gave up dairy and went to more plants.
I think it’s funny that you posted to tell us why you weren’t posting today. Maybe that should be changed to “not posting much or at great lengths today.”
This is symptomatic of blog addiction.
Hey, I love this post!! It had a lot in it, even though you weren’t “posting”. Very energetic post, as a matter of fact!!
Hey Hugo,
I’m just rolling by to spy on you. I’m glad you’re vegan, running, teaching and doing so well by doing these things! Strangely, I feel a sense of mini-me-ism to you. I just started blogging last month. It has a lot of maturing to do. I also am attempting to run again. Hopefully I’ll be able to compete in a mini-marathon by the fall. Grad school applications are still a work in progress. I’m still in the first and probably most painful phase of studying for the GRE. Your classes sounds so interesting. I wish I could enroll in one–you’ll always be a top prof in my book. I’ll stop by again in the future. Take care.
