The gloomy Golden Bear

Those of you who read me regularly or know me well are aware that I’m a devoted Cal football fan. If you’re wondering why I’m not blogging about their recent rise to #2 in the national polls, it’s because I have every expectation that in some way yet to be revealed, my beloved Golden Bears will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at the very last possible moment. The only chance we have at genuinely going undefeated this season is if as many fans and alumni as possible glumly predict disaster before each and every game. And that is what I intend to do.

In that spirit of carefully manufactured pessimism, I anticipate that Oregon State will nip my dear Bears this weekend, 23-21.

  1. I thought you were being a pessimist here, or perhaps even paranoid, but sometimes the glass really is half empty. Ouch.

  2. I’ve been a Cal fan long enough to know our tendency to underperform at the worst possible moments. On the other hand, we’ll still have a fine season — just not a national championship.

For a few achingly brief minutes today, it seemed likely we were to be #1.

At least Stanford lost their homecoming too. Sorry about your Huskies.

  3. Yeah, that was posted at the highly transitory 17-10 lead point. This UW team seems to rise to the level of their competitors for 2, maybe 3 quarters, then spit out the bit.

  4. Excellent prognostication Hugo. The thought of an OSU – USF title game might be the final straw to kill the BCS.

  5. I’m no BCS fan either. Of course, I’m betting that we’re going to end up with an LSU-Oklahoma national title game, just like four years ago. Cal, lord willing, will play Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. (And Boston College and South Florida can have at it in the Orange Bowl).

  6. Hopefully, you’ll be playing my Wolverines in the Rose Bowl, because I can’t bear losing yet another one to tOSU! :)
