Ten years ago today…

… I got my tongue pierced. (I had had the nipples pierced the year earlier.) The barbell was enlarged a few times over the next six months, but after I cracked two teeth with it in the fall of 1998, I took the darn thing out for good, less than eleven months after I first put it in. It was fun while it lasted.

How long ago it seems.

  1. …Why would you put in a larger barbell? My piercer started me with a large one, and I downgraded to a much smaller size, suited to the thickness of my tongue, once it was healed.

I still like mine. Gives me something to do in the winter waiting for the bus, when I’m wearing mittens and can’t bite my nails.

  2. In the circles I run with, the words “body” and “memories” put together have a much different connotation!

I have a cousin who’s all pierced up, and so are his friends. They’re all pretty poor, so they do it themselves. One night, my grandmother caught my cousin and a friend trying to talk another boy into letting them pierce his tongue, had the needle and everything! They don’t have the money to pay for a professional to do it, so will they have the money to pay for the doctor when they get an infection?!?!

    *shudder*
