I adore this poem and can't imagine Christmas without it. In fact, I found your blog two years ago because I was searching for this poem. Thank you.
My grandparents lived in Pasadena and I used to always spend Christmas day there. I live in Santa Rosa now, but I try to take the time to visit and drive down Christmas Tree Lane with its wonderful deodars. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Well, it's based on Milne's assumption that every English child would have been raised knowing that King John (who ruled 1199-1216) was the "worst" king in British history. That's a debatable point (George IV comes to my mind as a rival) but there is no other name besides John that cannot be given to an heir to the throne down to the present day. The John of this poem bears no resemblance to the original, save for the dark association with his Christian name,

Something I just noticed: what exactly makes King John "not a good man"? For years I've enjoyed this poem, and now all of a sudden it's really bugging me. I'd probably get a little squirrelly too if nobody talked to me for days and days and days. What gives?
