We honored my favorite film of 2010 at a Purim party on Saturday night. (Click to enlarge) And hey, why not throw a bone to the haters in their basements?

Fun with Myers-Briggs

This Myers-Briggs Dating Field Guide has been floating around the ‘net, and I thought it rather fine. But as an ENFP (who occasionally feels rather INFP) married to a strong ESTP, this was a bit disconcerting:

ESTP-
Why you want one: Know Jeremy Piven in Entourage? Sometimes it just feels good to be around an asshole.
Spoiler Alert: Followed to its logical conclusion, this personality type can also be called ‘sociopathic.’
Where to find one: The clubbiest of clubs, near edge of the dancefloor where they’re looking to shove their tongue down someones throat for awhile and then have some aggressive sex before they leave without saying anything.
Pickup technique: Maybe the easiest to pickup, just try to look good and get in their line of vision. Be aggressive.

Honey, is that you? We do call my wife Herschel, as I explained here…

ENFP-
Why you want one: Passionate, unpredictable, absolutely always interesting.
Spoiler Alert: Not loyal to people or ideologies. One day it’s yoga, the next it’s kickboxing. One day it’s Theravada Buddhism, the next it’s Assemblies of God. This applies to their romantic life.
Where to find one: The clubbiest of clubs, in the middle of the dancefloor, possibly on X.
Pickup technique: Wear some bright colors, talk about how you bathed in the Ganges to get salvation, give them drugs, promise to get tantric. Beware of passionate yet very sloppy kisses.

Hah. I actually was in Assemblies of God for five minutes. And yeah, that’s probably my kissing technique too.

Home is where the left is?

I’ve been very fortunate to do a lot of traveling in my life. But though I’ve been around the world, I’ve called California “home” for all of my life. I lived for nine months in Vienna when I was five, and spent three months teaching abroad in Florence, but with those exceptions, my trips abroad — or even out of state — have never lasted more than six weeks.

And I’m proud to say that I’ve only lived in areas currently represented by Democrats. Our home today is in Henry Waxman’s district. I teach in Adam Schiff’s district. I was born in Lois Capps‘ district, and spent most of my childhood in what is now Sam Farr‘s district. The family ranch is in Jerry McNerney‘s district, and I got my bachelor’s degree in Barbara Lee‘s district.

My brother manages to live in the only Labour-held constituency left in Southwest England. (Though my grandparents lie buried where my father grew up, in a tiny town now represented by a Tory.)

I love to travel. But I love to come home to the liberal enclaves of the Golden State.

Ten firsts for women in 2010

Continuing a tradition from the last two Decembers, let me offer a list of ten “firsts” for women this year.

In 2010:

Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar for “Hurt Locker”

Sgt. Sherri Gallagher becomes the first woman ever to win the US Army’s celebrated “Best Warrior” award

Brazil, a future superpower, elected its first woman president, Dilma Rousseff

Costa Rica elected its first woman president, Laura Chinchilla (how much do we love the name?)

Carolyn Bertozzi becomes the first woman to win the Lemelson-MIT prize, given to mid-career inventors and one of the most prestigious awards in American science

16 year-old Elena Myers became the first woman ever to win an AMA (American Motorcycle Association) racing event when she won a supersport race in Sonoma.

Kelly Kulick becomes the first women ever to win a Professional Bowling Association event in January, when she wins the Las Vegas Tournament of Champions.

Switzerland, one of the last countries in Europe to grant women suffrage, now has for the first time a governing cabinet in which women are the majority.

The US Supreme Court, for the first time, now has three women (Elena Kagan joining Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor)

New Mexico and South Carolina elected the first two women-of-color ever to hold governorships

Progress, not perfection.

Add other firsts in the comments if you like.

“Not a Presby, nor a Luth’ran” — an old Episcopal youth camp song

On an entirely different note, this song came into my head today. My mother sang it to me when I was a child. She learned it from her roommate at Vassar in the mid-1950s; her roommate had sung it at an Episcopalian youth camp. I’ve sung it myself for many of my Episcopalian friends (including priests and the current bishop of Los Angeles), and to my amazement, none of them know it. So here it is, and it is to be sung to the tune of “God Bless America”:

I am an Anglican,
I am C.E.:
Neither high church
Nor low church,
I am Protestant and Catholic and Free!

Not a Presby,
Nor a Luth’ran
Nor a Baptist, white with foam;
I am an Anglican –
Just one step from Rome!
I am an Anglican —
Just one step from Rome!

Whether it’s theologically true any longer is debatable, but the bit about the Baptist is pretty darned good.

A cake picture

My wife arranged a very special surprise birthday party for me yesterday. I’ll confess I had been hoping for a “surprise” party, but thought it would happen in a few weeks, closer to May 22nd. My wife had me totally convinced we were going to a regular 5 de Mayo backyard gathering, and I walked in to a garden filled with family and friends with my mouth agape. Lots of good conversation, a salsa band, and some amazing vegan Mexican food. Let me sing the praises of the caterer, and recommend Alex to any Los Angeles area folks looking for a pro who can deliver a wide variety of cuisines (he doesn’t limit himself to vegan.) The soy chorizo was pretty swell, and I managed to stumble through a cumbia with my wife without stepping on her feet or pulling any muscles in my ageing body.

And my amazing spouse capped it off with a huge (vegan) chocolate cake, complete with a picture of Matilde, our first chin, beautifully drawn in icing.

Here’s a picture at Flickr.

‘Twas a very happy day.
